The Golf Courses

Chamonix

This 6700 yard course was designed by the late Robert Trent Jones Snr., and is set among pine trees, with a number of water features. The greens and fairways are immaculate from June to October. The main feature, however,  is the magnificant scenery, with Mont Blanc dominating the whole area. Chamonix is a spectacular 75 minute drive from the chalet.

Evian

Home of the European Ladies Masters every July, Evian is one of the oldest in the region. Re-modelled by Cabell Robinson, the course features great views over Lake Leman (Geneva). At 6650 yards, Evian is tight, with mature trees, a little water and fast, very subtle greens.

Giez

35 minutes from La Clusaz, Giez is a fair test of golf. The greens are pacey and the fairways in good condition all year. A feature is a 4 wheel drive shuttle up to a 5 hole plateau, descending via a spectacular par 3. The back nine is tree lined, featuring a little water.Tthe 17th is a 580 yard monster, requiring three perfect shots to get home.

Aix Les Bains

Aix Les Bains is a British style parkland course and is 55 mins from the chalet. At 6100 yards the course is a fairly forgiving test, with a little water, and fast greens. As with all these courses, the clubhouse is superb.

Megeve

This course, designed by the legendary Henry Cotton, is 45 minutes from the chalet.  Set on gently undulating terrain, Megeve is a fairly forgiving course going out but the back nine is a superb test of golf.  This course is very reasonably priced outside July and August.

Bossey

Perhaps my favourite course, Bossey was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr,with great imagination on undulating terrain (buggy recommended).  This is a very interesting and complex course, with some blind shots. The condition of the course is always excellent.

Esery

Designed by top French aerchitect Michel Gayon, Esery is perhaps the most technical of the local courses. It is long (7000 yds) from the back tees, and the greens are well defended and wickedly difficult to read. There are several interesting water hazards.  The course is in excellent condition all summer. The magnificent clubhouse is set in and old monastery.

Lac d' Annecy

Lying 25 minutes from the chalet, this picturesque course is quite a challenge despite it's length of 5500 yds. The fairways are narrow and the greens small and fast. There are a number of elevated tees and greens, and a few links like fairways.

Divonne

This championship course was originally built in 1931 to follow the natural contours of the landscape. Legends of the game to walk its fairways include Seve, Arnold Palmer, Johnny Miller, Tom Watson and Mark O'Meara. Featuring a total of 6 par 3s and 6 par 5s as well as many water hazards, the layout is designed to test every aspect of your game.

My recommended courses  for a six game trip in no particular order is:

Chamonix Megeve, Evian, Esery, Giez and Bossey
